Student Life at OIS



Student is a person very interested in a particular subject. She is an enquirer who wants to find out and know. As per our tradition he is a jignasu! Orchid International School aims to instill in its students this deep sense of natural curiosity driven enquiry. Accordingly, the life of students has been carefully dovetailed into different domains of learning and experiencing. The scope for learning available to the day scholars and to the residential scholars is quite different although the affection and care remains the same.

The life of each of these categories of students is quite from the other. The day scholars get to live with their parents and other loved ones at home. They are in school only during the school hours and hence do not have the opportunity to learn on a scale the other category of students can. They do not get to live with their friends and “have fun” as such. The residential scholars on the other hand have a very wide ranging canvas of learning but they are away from their parents while the school in session!

At Orchid Gurukul, an earnest attempt is made to provide to the day scholars as much exposure as is provided to the residential scholars within the constraints and possibilities of the time table. The gap still remains quite significant. Education takes on a broad meaning at boarding schools. Residential schools, like ours, have an explicit mission to help students become better-rounded individuals. Our residential students derive the following benefits to a more significant extent compared to the day scholars.

  • Orchid Gurukul teachers usually have advanced degrees in their field, are typically passionate about their subject and love to teach it to children. Students on campus get to interact with such teachers in leisurely settings.

  • Boarders get to participate in the preparations of all the school functions providing them with opportunities to work in different types of teams and on different types of projects.

  • Boarders get better opportunities for assembly presentations and participation.

  • The good sports facilities can only be used if enough time is available and hence the boarders have better and wider possibilities.

  • Better and richer exposure to the arts, crafts and other aesthetic activities, including participation in the Sunday special art classes.

  • Scope for expressing ones talents during the fortnightly “Kala Prakash,” which is a platform for children to make mistakes and thereby learn better!

  • Getting to live away from home! It's never easy to leave the nest and be in the watchful eye of qualified teachers and mentors rather than of parents who love us but may not be able to provide the right educational inputs.

  • Learning to be responsible for one self. Taking a lot of little steps towards maturity is one of the intangibles of going to boarding school. We learn to get along with others because it is a community. We learn to be responsible for our actions because we are bound by an honor or discipline code of some kind. The lessons in life learned in boarding school will lay a solid foundation for adulthood.

  • Residential Orchid Gurukul students generally make friends for life. Most boarding school graduates look back at their years in school as a time when lasting friendships were established. Coupled with that is the building of a network of friends and acquaintances who know us and care about us. Isn't that what life is really all about? Being surrounded by people who understand us and care about us is affirming and encouraging.

  • Over a period of time residential school students become self-motivated and reduce their dependence on external motivation.

The students learn to share with their friends and begin to care for them.

The school arranges field visits to pertinent places, institutes and people for our students to have a firsthand exposure to principles and concepts learnt in the classroom. The intent is to provide realistic learning opportunities to children so that what they learn makes sense to them leading to a natural understanding and absorption of what has been taught or what has been learnt.

During the two previous academic sessions visits have been arranged to IIT-Mumbai TECHFEST, IIMC-Kolkata, factory visits in Nashik, IUCAA Pune, Nehru Science Center – Mumbai, Science Museum – Nashik, Gurdwara/ Temple/ Church in Nashik, Orphanages and old age homes in Nashik and many briefer visits. These visits are arranged based on the age/class of the children and prior to the visit appropriate information and guidance is provided. In addition to the field and outdoor visits we invite and ensure a stream of distinguished and passionate people of different fields and walks of life to the school for meeting and interacting with the children

The school has been having an increasingly deeper association with some premier learning and educational centers of the country. We have been visited by few of the people from such institutes for longer durations of time for providing specialized inputs to our students and also for our students to experience passionate people and what is behind such minds.

Approach towards Computers Education

We renamed the subject of Computer Education as COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCES and CONCEPTS to enable students to learn the KNOW WHY of computers rather than only to use them dexterously. We introduced the reviewed subject from Classes 4 to 7 from June 2013. Teaching-learning sessions and curriculum development is happening together.

In the new curriculum, we will explore logic and decision making through logic puzzles and games in the classes. Some of these activities are part of mathematics teaching in our school already. Hence, we assigned the rechristened subject to the Mathematics teacher of the respective class with a couple of additional periods, which were for the subject of Computer Education. The new subject is challenging, interesting, and promising. Our Science Activity and Innovation Centre (SAIC) provide the platform to extend this endeavor to activity based science learning.

The curriculum for the subject of Computational Science and Concepts will include development of computational abilities, logical abilities, mental arithmetic, and history of computers and associated skills in a systematic manner for children to understand the basis on which the machine functions rather than just being able to play games on it.

Introduction of the subject brought in promise to this academic year! We are eagerly working together and upon these ideas and concepts. We hope children will enjoy the same too!
